The UDF (Universal Disk Format) is a format specification of a file system for storing files on optical media, usually DVD’s. Windows Vista and Windows 7 are two examples of DVD containing this file system.
By default when you mount an ISO image with the UDF ISO 13346 file system with the Archive mounter (by double clicking the iso file) you will see no archives in the mounted folder. This is what you have to do to mount it properly:
First let’s create a new directory in the /media folder:
sudo mkdir /media/dir_name
Now mount the the UDF iso:
sudo mount -t udf,iso9660 -o loop “imagen.iso” /media/dir_name
Needless to say you should replace “dir_name” with your directory name.
Cheers!

1. Check if you have SP3 (Service Pack 3) installed. Right click My computer -> properties. In the general tab you should see your current SP version. If you don’t have SP3 yet, can download it right from the microsoft site.
2. Download, unzip and execute this program: UXTender.exe. Click on “Patch”, a confirmation message will show up. You can restart after applying the patch, but you can save time completing the step 3 first.3. Download this file. Unpack it and copy the files to c:\windows\resources\themes\
the .theme files should be on the themes directory like this:
4. Done, now restart your computer. To change the theme right click anywhere in your desktop and select properties. You can change your theme in the Themes tag, and the color in the appearance tag.
Cheers!
After a fresh Ubuntu Desktop install you’ll have, by default, all necessary programs to write documents, spread sheets and presentations (open office), burn cd/dvd (brasero), edit and manage your Photos (fspot, GIMP), send instant messages with most of the instant messaging services (Empathy), manage your email accounts (Evolution mail), Organize and listen to your music collection (Rhythmbox), Play your movies (Totem movie player), and, of course, browse the internet (Firefox).
But there’s a catch, you can’t listen to MP3 just yet, you can’t play encrypted DVD’s either, ms core fonts (arial for instance) are not there and therefore many internet pages do not look as intended… and the look and feel could be improved. Let’s fix all that in a few simple steps.
Everybody likes a screenshot:

Art Nouveau [aʁ nuvo] is an artistic movement proliferated during the last decade of the 19th century and the early years of the 20th century. Flourishing in France, but with a strong presence in Belgium, Germany (Jugendstil), Italy (Stile Liberty or Stile Floreale), Spain (Modernismo), Holland (Nieuwe Kunst), and other European countries, as well as further afield as in the United States of America, the term itself pointed emphatically to a rejection of historicism and tradition in favour of a new aesthetic appropriate for a new century.
The movement was born in January of 1995, when a Czech artist working in Paris, Alphonse Mucha, produced a lithographed poster which appeared in the streets of Paris as an advertisement for the play Gismonda by Victorien Sardou, starring Sarah Bernhardt. It was an overnight sensation, and announced the new artistic style to the citizens of Paris.
There are very interesting stories behing many posters of this period, here are a few examples:
Le Chat Noir
Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen (1896)
This lithograph was actually an advertisement poster for “Le Chat Noir”, a 19th-century cabaret in the bohemian Montmartre district of Paris, opened by the artist Rodolphe Salis.
It this cabaret, Salis most often played, with exaggerated, ironic politeness, the role of conférencier. It was this attitude from the cabaret scene that originated the “les arts incohérents” movement (later associated to the “avant-garde”) and the comic monologues.
This is how Salis describet his cavaret:
“The Chat Noir is the most extraordinary cabaret in the world. You rub shoulders with the most famous men of Paris, meeting there with foreigners from every corner of the world.”
Ambassadeurs
Toulouse-Lautrec (1892)
This lithograph publicized the singer Aristide Bruant’s debut at the Ambassadeurs on the Champs-Elysées, an altogether up-market venue for this popular entertainer who usually performed at his own café in Montmartre, the Mirliton (Reed Pipe). Source
Moulin Rouge – La Goulue
Toulouse-Lautrec (1891)
The poster advertises the Moulin Rouge dance hall and its featured performer La Goulue (the Greedy One or the Glutton), so named for her voracious appetite for all things sensual. By advertising a specific celebrity rather than anonymous beauties, Lautrec infused his poster with star power. The poster created a sensation, and fueled the popularity of both La Goulue and Lautrec. Source
Jane Avril
Toulouse-Lautrec (1899)
Toulouse-Lautrec’s penultimate poster, implicates one of the artist’s closest friends and favorite models in the sexual goings-on of Montmartre, the famous dancer Jane Avril (1868-1943). Jane was the daughter of a demi-mondaine known as La Belle Elise and the Marchese Luigi de Font, an Italian aristocrat from whom Jane’s mother extracted minimal support after he left her. Beaten by her mother, she ran away from home at the age of sixteen and was confined in a lunatic asylum… There she was a favorite of the nuns who cared for her. It was at a party they gave in her honor that Jane first displayed her joy in music and dancing. The performance convinced her caretakers that the girl might not be as mad as her mother insisted. Upon her release, she refused to return to her mother’s home, finding her way instead into the dance halls of Paris. Source
Sol Seppy is a cellist, pianist, singer-songwriter and producer from the United Kingdom with Greek and Australian influence. Her real name is Sophie Michalitsianos.
When she was twenty-three she moved to the US and after beeing a contributor on two sparklehorse albums, she was eventually able to afford moving to upstate New York, where she set up a studio of her own.
“Having the luxury of my own studio was great, but without an engineer to stop me, I destroyed most of what I wrote. To my dismay, my beloved music was turning into a gargantuan mirror and I couldn’t stand it. Barely any songs made it out alive; the studio was like a war zone.”
One night, while Sophie was out, there was an explosion in her studio, which promptly melted every piece of gear she owned, taking the whole house with it. She relocated, and began rebuilding another studio from scratch, and it was here that Sol Seppy began to manifest itself.
Sol Seppy’s music is a mixture of very intimate vocals oven an ethereal athmosphere… or as she describes it herself, “is a mixture of earth and space and dirt and glitter”. This album is beautiful and really worth listening to.

As the sole voice and creator behind Sol Seppy, Sophie landed not only the role of writer and performer of her first album (The Bells of 1 2), but also that of engineer and producer, with some additional mixing duties by Paul Antonell; all in all, a very substantial task for one person to surmount.
Slo fuzz video:
A lovely interview from toazted.com where she explains the origin of the name Sol Seppy… pretty cool story.
Encrypting the complete hard disk of the computer is a good practice to keep your sensitive information safe in case of stealing or loss of your computer.
With the help of software such as TrueCrypt, encryption is an easy thing to accomplish… as long as you have a single operating system installed on your computer. For dual boot systems it’s a different story.
This is a guide on how to setup a fully encrypted dual boot system (except for a small boot partition) with windows and linux (in this case win XP + Ubuntu Karmic Koala) using a LVM encrypted partitioning scheme for linux, and truecrypt for encrypting the windows partition.
There are two possible scenarios for a encrypted dual boot system using truecrypt and LVM:
1. Use trucrypt boot loader to load the windows partition directly and press ESC to load GRUB and therefore ubuntu.
2. Use GRUB as the boot loader to chainload truecrypt boot loader and therefore load windows.
I personally prefer the first option for one reason: with the truecrypt boot loader you can display a custom message in the pre-boot authentication screen, for example “Disk Error” or “Non System Disk”, this way the computer will appear to be frozen and no text will be displayed while you type the password (even if its a wrong one).
This guide covers how to complete the first scenario. At the end you’ll find some guidelines and useful links on how to accomplish the second scenario in case you prefer the GRUB boot loader.
This guide is separated in 4 steps:
1. Install Windows
2. Install Ubuntu and setup an encrypted LVM partitioning.
3. Encrypt Windows
4. Optional steps. How to change the truecrypt bootloader to GRUB and useful tweaks.
Please follow all the steps so you don’t miss any special considerations.
freeNX is by far the easiest way to configure remote access management in a computer. It is also fast and secure as the information between client and server travels encrypted and compressed. This guide was tested on Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope (ubuntu 9.04) but should work as well for any ubuntu version as long as the repositories are correctly selected (see instructions on step one). Also, freeNX can be installed on linux, window$ and mac so don’t worry about OS compatibility issues.
NOTE:
Steps 1 to 6 should be executed on the SERVER machine only.
Step 7 is for the CLIENT machine only.
First install the freeNX server (server machine only)
1. Add repositories
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
append the next two lines:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/freenx-team/ppa/ubuntu VERSION main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/freenx-team/ppa/ubuntu VERSION main
VERSION should be replaced with the correct ubuntu version: jaunty, hardy or whatever (first word only)
2. Add the public Key
sudo apt-key adv –recv-keys –keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com 2a8e3034d018a4ce
3. update apt
sudo apt-get update
4. Install freeNX
sudo aptitude install freenx
5. Run the setup (this will install necessary files and create the special user “nx”)
sudo /usr/lib/nx/nxsetup –install
(use default keys)
6. Configure SSH and freeNX for correct port
open the configuration file:
sudo gedit /etc/ssh/sshd_config
change these lines:
Port 5678 ##anything but the default (22)
PubkeyAuthentication yes
now edit node.conf
sudo gedit /etc/nxserver/node.conf
find and edit this line
SSHD_PORT=5678
port number should be the same as in previous file.
7. install the client (client machines only)
go to the NoMachine Web Site:
http://www.nomachine.com/select-package-client.php
Download the freeNx client deb file, double click to install.
alternatively, an opensource client can be installed (worst):
sudo apt-get install qtnx
The client front end can be opened from the applications menu: applications -> Internet -> NX client for Linux -> NX client for Linux
In “Configuration”, you will need to enter the server’s ip and port, username and password, Select your desktop session and click connect. Very simple. You can open applications -> Internet -> NX client for Linux -> NX connection wizard to assist you with this step.
A few screenshoots of the connection process with a bit of censoring:
Enjoy
1. Install the necessary packages:
sudo apt-get install apache2 php5-mysql libapache2-mod-php5 mysql-server
2. Install phpMyAdmin
sudo apt-get install phpmyadmin
Note: when it prompts for the modules to install, select apache2 only, with this you can avoid steps 3 & 4.
Now test that everything is working by typing the following URLs in a web browser:
You should see something like this:
![]() |
![]() |
In case phpmyadmin is not working, try the following:
3. Configure Apache with phpMyAdmin:
open apache2.conf with a text editor
sudo gedit abrir el archivo /etc/apache2/apache2.conf
add the following line at the end of the file:
Include /etc/phpmyadmin/apache.conf
Save the file
4. Restart apache
sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart
try phpmyadmin again:
http://localhost/phpmyadmin/
Have lots of fun (yeah right)
The magic lamp effect is my favorite when it comes to minimizing windows, but there’s one problem with it, you cannot configure the “Magic Lamp Max Waves” to zero due to some copyright crap from apple (since they think they invented the effect or something). Fortunately there’s a cure for this, you can patch compiz to make the effect look something like this:
You can find tons of videos on youtube with this effect.Look here you will see the effect at 2:08.
This is how to do it:
1. Use Hex editor to open “/usr/lib/compiz/libanimation.so”
sudo ghex2 /usr/lib/compiz/libanimation.so
If you don’t have HexEditor already, you can install it by opening Applications->AddRemove and serching for “hex editor” or entering the next command in a terminal:
sudo apt-get install ghex
2. Find “magic_lamp_max_waves”, look for the following “<min>3</min>”, change 3 to 0

3. Save, Close
4. Use Text Editor to open “/usr/share/compiz/animation.xml”
sudo gedit /usr/share/compiz/animation.xml
5. Find “magic_lamp_max_waves”, scroll down about 50 lines until you see this: “<default>3</default>” and, in the next line “<min>3</min>” change “3″ to “0″ in both lines. So it looks like this “<default>0</default>” and “<min>0</min>”
6. Save, Close
7. Restart GDM if the 3D desktop is currently running (or restart your computer).
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart
8. In compizConfig Settings Manager, go to Effects -> Animations -> Minimize Animation and set Minimization effect to “Magic Lamp”. It should be configured to zero waves by default, if you want to change this value then go to the Effect Settings tab and change Max Waves to your value
